This is a listing of Windows programs that are very good to start out a new computer with or add to the existing collection of programs. All of these programs are free and do not require activation, just a simple download. There is one exception, Avast! Anti-virus requires a key but it is absolutely free [every year simply renew the key for free]. Below is a listing of the programs and their download links along with their category and annotation.
Communication
Multi-Network Chat Client
- Is a program that allows the user to connect to many screen names at once.
I.E. The user can simultaneously connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, and GTalk.
- Pidgin - Pidgin is a service that allows the user to connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo!,
and GTalk. This is an open source project that was formerly called GAIM.
This is an excellent program for instant messaging on the computer.
- Trillian - Trillian is one of the first multi-chat programs available on the net.
It connects to all services, logs chats, and gives the user the ability to
expand capabilities though plug-ins.
Single Network Chat Client
- Is a program provided from a specific website or online service that
connects them to their network only. I.E. AIM Messenger allows the user to
connect to AOL's network of people along with ICQ contacts.
- AIM
Messenger - AIM Messenger is one of the first instant messaging
programs available on the net. It is produced and maintained by AOL.
- MSN
Messenger - MSN Messenger is a program that is produced and maintained
by Microsoft. The webcam feature works very well for video conferencing
with friends and family.
- GTalk
Messenger - GTalk is a messaging client produced by Google. It works
very well and gives the user to make voice calls much like Skype. GTalk is
integrated into Google's most famous product, Gmail. All conversations are
logged within the users Gmail account.
- Yahoo!
Messenger - Yahoo! Messenger is produced by Yahoo!, and allows
excellent webcam capabilities along with other interactive features:
IMvironments, Photo sharing, and many readily accessible chatrooms.

Office
2003 to 2007 - This is a converter produced by Microsoft for Microsoft
Office products. It allows the user to convert down from the new .docx
format and open it in Office 2003. It also converts up 2003 documents to be
saved as .docx.

to Word - The Works to Word converter takes a .wps document and converts
it to be opened by Word and save in a .doc format.
Graphics

GIMP
- GIMP is an Open Source program that works just like Adobe Photoshop. It
does require a learning curve to use the features. If the user has
background in Photoshop or Fireworks.

- Irfanview was a college project that has become a very good image viewing
application. One fantastic feature of Irfanview is the ability to convert
any image into any other format available.

- Micro Torrent is a bit torrent application that is small and requires
little installation. The program allows the user to download .torrent files.

Mozilla
Firefox - Mozilla Firefox is one of the fastest most customizable
websites available on the web for free. It is an open source project
that is constantly being updated and made more secure. One method of
customization is through extensions, which are small tools that carry out
specific tasks.
- Del.icio.us - Del.icio.is is a social bookmarking website that allows users to share
and find new bookmarks in a community. This Firefox extension allows the
user to login to their bookmark page and tag while surfing the net.
- Email
This! - Email this is a Firefox extension that allows the user to surf
the net and email webpage links to family and friends. Works with all
major email service providers.
- Extended
Copy Menu - The extended copy menu is a very handy tool that allows
the user to highlight and copy text in a variety of ways: copy as HTML,
... as plain text, ...as link, etc...
- Fast
Video Download - Fast Video Downloader is a handy tool that saves any
flash video source as a .flv that can be easily converted by zamzar.com.
- FoxyTunes - FoxyTunes is a integrated media controller that lives in Firefox and
controls all of the media players that can be hidden in the background. A
very practical extension for listening to music and podcasts available on
the web.
- Map
This - Map this is an extension where the user may highlight an
address on a webpage right click and open it on a Google Map.
- Plain
Text to Link - Plain text to link is a great tool for those websites
that just type a web address on their webpage but doesn't actually link it
to that page. Simply highlight and click open and it will open in a new
tab in Firefox.
- Screengrab! - Screengrab! is an awesome webpage screenshot creator. This extension
allows the user to make a screenshot of an entire page, section, or
visible portion. Then one the user selects the option it creates a fast
and good looking .png image.
- Smart
Search - Is a great little extension that searches a word or phrase in
the dictionary or encyclopedia of choice.
- Zotero - This is a great extension for students and researchers who have large
bibliography pages. This is a free bibliographic software that grabs the
source information from a variety of library catalogs, invisible web
databases, and even wikipedia. Of course it does MLA and APA citations
along with others. But, as always, be sure to check your citations after
they are generated this like any other citation generator makes mistakes.
Multimedia

iTunes
- I tunes is one of the most popular music players at the moment because it
works with the popular iPod. It is also a very powerful XML back database
that works fantastically well. The program allows the user to quickly search
and edit the information of their songs. The program also rips CDs and has a
music download library that is inexpensive.

VLC
Media Player - VLC is a fantastic Open Source multimedia player: it will
play anything you throw at it. It also for more advanced users can convert
video files, rip streaming media from the net, and many other handy
features.
Office

Adobe
Reader - Adobe reader is a very good application to have on the computer
it opens the popular filetype .pdf. This reader easily integrates with the
web browser to view online pdf documents.

OpenOffice
- OpenOffice is a free and Open Source alternative for an office suite on
the computer. It will open and save Microsoft Office documents and other
files. No registration required even though it will ask for the user to
provide some data. It saves normally in its native format but can save in
others with a selection and will save any document produced as a PDF. This
is very handy for around the workplace and as an non-editable digital copy
of a document.

PrimoPDF
Creator - This is a PDF creator that works simply as a printer. On a
webpage you want to keep press print and select PrimoPDF as the printer and
give the PDF a filename and then it is on the computer as a PDF document.
This is a very handy tool for easy sharing of information and sites with
links.
Security

Avast!
- Avast! is a free and powerful anti-virus program. The program updates its
virus definitions every day usually and even when the program needs updating
it does that automatically too. The program constantly scans the websites
and catches viruses that may be initialized from them, instant messages, and
computer for viruses. The home edition is free and the user must register
for a key which is completely free, the key will expire after a year then
simply register for another one. The keys are always free for the home
edition.

SpyBot
S&D - SpyBot S&D is an application that removes spyware,
malware, and other ads that may be on your computer. It has the ability to
do a scan before the computer fully boots to catch spyware before it starts
and it hard to remove. This is a great program to speed up the computer and
makes it safe from security violators.
Utilities

Capiche
- Capiche is a screenshot application that allows the user to take the whole
screen or a section by manipulating the programs box. This is a very helpful
and simple application.

Cleanup!
- Cleanup! is a small but awesome application that frees up a good amount of
space on the users HD by removing unnecessary files.

WinRAR
- This is a RAR application. A .rar file is just like a .zip file but a bit
smaller. This program opens any compressed filetype.
